Day 47 - El Questro

Phoebe and Georgina were thrilled to go horse riding first thing on this day. Last time George was around a horse it bit her chest so she was a bit nervous, but we got her patting some horses before they rode which helped a lot. Alex was too young to ride.

After the ride, George and Phoebe talked of buying a horse, so it is safe to assume they enjoyed themselves immensely. By now we were all feeling the heat, so we went to Moonshine Gorge, a great place to swim.

Using our masks we saw plenty of fish. These didn't bite like the ones at Florence Falls. We returned to camp for lunch, then went 4WDing. The road to Saddleback Ridge and Lookout warns only for experienced 4 wheel drivers so we had to ignore that. It couldn't be as challenging to drive as the ridge top track looked at Arkaroola! It wasn't, but the view was as good.

See the track we came along in the above photo?

What Justin makes go up the Mountain, I must get down. It is disconcerting when you can't see the road over the bonnet because the road drops steeply away in front of you. The good news is the brakes didn't fail. We are really enjoying the 4 wheel driving on this trip, possibly Justin is addicted to river crossings. Here he is crossing one after our Moonshine Gorge swim.

There was still some daylight so we visited Chamberlain Gorge briefly and tackled another lookout. The Homestead is at the gorge, looking luxurious in postcards. Branco's lookout was much more impressive.

Justin had happy Fathers' Day beef burgers for dinner after a long chat with the man in the next site, Neil, who had just crossed the Gibb River Road with his wife and four girls. His caravan was still going but fairly beaten up. The fridge and microwave died, the water tank has holes in it from the stones flying up, he had tyre and exhaust trouble on the car, shockers on the caravan blew, and some external pieces are missing from the rig. When he heard which direction we were going, he patted Justin's shoulder in a consoling fashion. So we weren't overly positive about our travelling on the Gibb River road, planned for the next day. Neil did give some helpful suggestions on what is worth seeing, and let us know that the first third of the road, in the direction we are taking, will be the roughest.
